Many of our I'e Kuku patterns are based on traditional work referenced in literature
and available for study at places like the Bishop Museum. We also
greatly appreciate the guidance and knowledge of our Kupuna and
Kumu as we explore the depth and richness of the ideas and creativity of past generations. We hope that by making these patterns
readily available, we can inspire artisans to blaze forward with
their own dreams and ideas.
We
give permission for the images of traditional patterns posted on
this website to be used for non-commercial, educational purposes
only. If teachers and students of Kapa, Hawaiian studies and related
subjects would like access to the original high resolution images,
please feel free to contact us.
Commercial
( money changes hands ) use of these images, even by not for profit
organizations, is not endorsed or authorized without written permission
from us.
We
consider the non-traditional patterns and the products created
by Ka Ulu Hawai'i as our creative work. There are a lot of late
nights and weekends involved and we would like to keep doing it
by charging a little. Copying them is not authorized without written permission. Of course, we are happy to see our work
shown as examples for educational purposes but contact us first.
As
we offer the carving of custom patterns, the designs provided to
us are yours unless we both agree ( in writing ) to share them
with each other ( such as collaborative designs ) or with the community
( example: images on our website of custom work ). They are your
work and will be cared for as such.
